With almost 30 years of experience in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, Dr. Bender came to Samaritan through our partnership with Stanford Health Care. He also serves as a clinical associate professor in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Stanford University.

After earning his medical degree at Wayne State University, Dr. Bender completed general surgery training at the University of Colorado before spending a year in Edinburgh, Scotland, as a registrar (resident) in thoracic surgery at the Royal Infirmary. He returned to the United States for formal cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Chicago and then joined the faculty of the University of Texas in Dallas before going into private practice.

Dr. Bender has expertise in the treatment of adult heart disease, including coronary artery problems, cardiac arrhythmia and valve disease. Additionally, he treats patients with diseases of the blood vessels and of the chest, such has lung cancer or emphysema.

In his spare time, Dr. Bender writes software to aid in the training and the practice of cardiothoracic surgery. He continues to publish articles in surgery journals and is actively engaged in the development of young surgeons expertise in the operating room.
