Watch Your Newport Hospital Grow January 22, 2021 1947 – A non-profit corporation, Pacific Communities Hospital Association, is formed to raise funds to build a 17-bed acute care facility. A matching federal grant assures adequate funding for the $225,000 project. 1953 –Pacific Communities Hospital is constructed and opens on Jan. 5 to serve the community’s medical needs. The “new” Pacific Communities Hospital under construction in the early 1950s. 1972 – Voters approve the formation of Pacific Communities Health District, a tax-supported political subdivision, to own and operate the hospital. It is governed by a publicly elected board of directors. 1976 – A clinics wing is added to the hospital, funded by a $350,000 bond measure approved by voters. A mom walks her children into the Pacific Communities Hospital clinic wing in the late 1970s. 1989 – A major, two-story addition adds 37,000 square feet to the original hospital building, funded by a voter-approved $4.6 million bond measure. Jan. 1, 2002 – The district enters into a 30-year lease and operating agreement with Corvallis-based Samaritan Health Services. As part of that agreement, the non-profit Samaritan Pacific Health Services is created and now operates the hospital and its related medical facilities. May 2015 – Voters approve a $57 million bond measure to add an 87,268 square foot building to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital and for significant interior and exterior renovation of the two-story building. May 23, 2017 – Ground is broken on the hospital expansion project, which is to be designed and built by The Neenan Company and Gerding Builders. Jan. 31, 2019 – The three-story hospital addition is completed. The brand-new Emergency, Diagnostic Imaging and Surgery departments are on the first floor; primary care and specialty medical clinics are on the second floor; and the top floor is dedicated to inpatient care. February 2020 – The two-story structure renovation, including a full seismic upgrade, is completed. Now, the two-story and three-story buildings are seamlessly connected inside and out for ease of patient access to all hospital and outpatient services at one location. October 2020 — With the original one-story hospital structure demolished and a large parking area along the front, the Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital redevelopment project is officially completed!
