Some causes of damage to the ankle may include trauma, fracture, infection, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Patients will need to go through a screening process and meet a set of criteria in order to be cleared for the surgery. Criteria include: Being a non-smoker Having good circulation Having no history of peripheral arterial disease; and No history of ankle joint infections Prior to surgery, patients are also evaluated to determine if non-operative options such as injections, weight loss, bracing or anti-inflammatory medications are more suitable. A typical recovery includes staying off the ankle for six weeks followed by physical therapy. Most patients are walking and pain-free within 10 to 12 weeks of surgery.
