SLCH Recognizes 2021 Recipients of DAISY Award May 12, 2022 Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital has partnered with The DAISY Foundation in a mission to recognize extraordinary, compassionate nurses and the care they provide to patients and families every day. DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system. Krystle Miller, RN, and Nikki Faulconer, RN in the Critical Care Unit, are the 2021 recipients of the DAISY Award at SLCH. Miller was nominated by Karnia Clay for the devoted care Miller provided to her husband. “Krystle is a very dedicated, compassionate and thorough nurse,” said Clay. “I am so thankful that she was my husband’s nurse during his recent stay. I will be forever grateful for Krystle’s efforts in nursing my husband back to health. She is a frontline extraordinaire.” Faulconer’s nominator is anonymous but had the following to say about her. “An elderly man dying of COVID elected to remove his oxygen. After family said goodbye and left, Nikki stayed by his side and explained exactly what would happen when he took his oxygen off. She kept him comfortable, got down at eye level with him, held his hand and told him it was okay. Nikki stayed with him through the entire process, showing him compassion and allowing him his dignity.” A ceremony was held on Nov. 17, 2021 to honor Miller and Faulconer for the PRIDE they show in their work. They were presented with a certificate and a beautiful Healer’s Touch statue created by an artist in Zimbabwe, which symbolizes the relationship between nurses, patients and families. The DAISY Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura autoimmune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill, inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
