Samaritan OB/GYN Recognized for Low C-section Rates

Samaritan Obstetrics & Gynecology – Corvallis has been recognized by the American College of Nurse-Midwives for facilitating low cesarean section rates for new moms.

Samaritan Obstetrics & Gynecology was just one of three practices nationwide named a Best Practice in the category of more than 500 births per year, for their low C-section rate of 11% for first-time moms with low-risk births. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the national rate of C-sections for new mothers in this category is 26%, and the national goal put forth by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion is 23.9% or less.

“Our clinic, in coordination with Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center’s Labor and Delivery staff, makes it a priority to help all women have individualized and safe birthing experiences,” said Certified Nurse Midwife Emily Zeno Yeast. “The close collaboration between midwives and physicians in our clinic helps us provide the best possible care, and this recognition is just one example of our excellent outcomes. If you want a safe birthing experience, with minimal interventions, you are in good hands here.”

Zeno Yeast detailed the ways each group contributes to the low C-section rates:

Midwives: “Our clinic’s eight certified nurse-midwives are experts in normal pregnancy and childbirth, advocating for and supporting each woman, remaining present for and patient with the labor process.”

Physicians: “Our physicians collaborate with and support the midwives in providing care. They value patient autonomy and preferences, and utilize their skills and training to keep moms and babies safe.”

Labor and Delivery nurses: “Their constant, caring presence ensures our patients are safe and supported. They are our best allies and colleagues in providing personalized care to mothers, babies and families.”

“Though C-sections can be a lifesaving tool for both mother and baby, it is important to keep the rates low by preventing unnecessary C-sections,” said Zeno Yeast. “C-section births cause longer hospital stays and increased rates of respiratory problems for newborns – as well as long-term effects on the infant’s microbiome that we are only beginning to understand the implications of. For the mothers, risks include higher rates of hemorrhage, transfusions, infections and blood clots. Once a mother delivers by C-section, she faces a much higher chance of having C-sections in the future, which can lead to higher risks of major complications like hysterectomy and uterine rupture.”

Samaritan Obstetrics & Gynecology features midwives and doctors working together to offer patients the best of both worlds –  woman and family-centered care with advanced expertise for complex situations. The clinic cares for women through all stages, including adolescence, adulthood, pregnancy, motherhood, menopause and beyond.
