Curriculum

Rotation Schedule

The academic year consists of 13 blocks, which are a mix of two- and four-week rotations, with longitudinal elements embedded throughout your three years of training.  There are longitudinal experiences in continuity clinic, leadership, pediatrics, geriatrics, obstetrics, and osteopathic manipulative medicine. A sample of the Family Medicine curriculum is listed below.

Intern Year

Continuity clinic will be each week except when on away rotations. Days in Continuity Clinic are adjusted per rotation. All residents are limited to one half day of clinic per week while on inpatient rotations.

Ambulatory Care Month	4 weeks	Our interns spend their first rotation getting to know each other and getting familiar with the faculty and the three sites. During this time, they become certified for ALSO, NRP, and PALS.
Inpatient Medicine	12 weeks	One four-week plus three separate two-week rotations working with either the Family Medicine or Internal Medicine team at a level 2 trauma center, as well as an additional two-week rotation on inpatient medicine night float.
Inpatient Pediatrics	8 weeks	One rotation on the pediatric floor at Good Samaritan followed by a rotation at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanual in Portland.
Obstetrics (L&D)	4 weeks	Working with an OB-GYN and Midwife team for deliveries and management of labor.
Continuity Clinic	16 weeks	Managing your own panel of patients with your care team at your continuity site.
Outpatient Pediatrics	4 weeks	Outpatient pediatrics with a variety of community pediatricians.
Sports Medicine	4 weeks	The Samaritan Athletic Medicine Center working with patients from the community as well as Oregon State University athletes.

Second Year

Continuity clinic will be each week except when on away rotations. Days in Continuity Clinic are adjusted per rotation. All residents are limited to one half day of clinic per week while on inpatient rotations.

ICU	2 weeks	Managing ICU at level 2 trauma center.
Inpatient Medicine	10 weeks	Three separate 2-week rotations working either on the Family Medicine or Internal Medicine Team at a level 2 trauma center, and two separate 2-week rotations working at a critical access hospital.
Emergency Medicine	4 weeks	Rotation at a level 2 trauma center with transfers from critical access hospitals.
Obstetrics (L&D)	4 weeks	Working with an OB-GYN and Midwife team for deliveries and management of labor.
Continuity Clinic	8 weeks + Longitudinal Experience	Managing your own panel of patients with your care team at your continuity site.
Outpatient Pediatrics	4 weeks	Outpatient pediatrics with a variety of community pediatricians.
Urgent Care	4 weeks	Focus on triage, procedures, and clinic efficiency.
Dermatology	2 weeks	Exposure to a wide variety of dermatology treatments, procedures, and Mohs surgery.
Cardiology	2 weeks	Inpatient experience working with the Cardiology service at a level 2 trauma hospital.
Electives	12 weeks	Two- or four-week electives throughout the year.

Third Year

Continuity clinic will be each week except when on away rotations. Days in Continuity Clinic are adjusted per rotation. All residents are limited to one half day of clinic per week while on inpatient rotations.

Inpatient Medicine	6 weeks	One 2-week rotation working either on the Family Medicine or Internal Medicine Team at a level 2 trauma center, and a 4-week rotation working at a critical access hospital.
Pediatric Emergency Medicine	4 weeks	Managing acute pediatric patients at Providence St. Vincent in Portland, OR.
Continuity Clinic	14 weeks + Longitudinal Experience	Managing your own panel of patients with your care team at your continuity site.
Hospice/Palliative Care	4 weeks	Rotation with inpatient palliative services and time spent at the Evergreen Hospice House in Albany, OR.
General Surgery	4 weeks	Outpatient rotation with a variety of surgical experiences including wound care, podiatry, general and bariatric surgery, and pre-op clinic.
Sports Medicine	4 weeks	Outpatient sports medicine with a variety of community providers.
Electives	16 weeks	Two- or four-week electives throughout the year.
