Sports Physical Therapy at the SAM

Welcome to Samaritan Athletic Medicine Sports Physical Therapy

At Samaritan Athletic Medicine, our sports physical therapists work alongside surgeons and primary care doctors specialized in orthopedics and sports medicine. Our close interactions with your physician and care team allows collaboration in planning and providing the highest quality treatment. Our sports-certified physical therapists will evaluate any injury that affects a joint, tendon, muscle or ligament, and create an individualized treatment plan that gets you back to what you love, as quickly and safely as possible.

Why Sports Physical Therapy?

Sports physical therapy specifically focuses on rehabilitation to return to sports or recreational activities, while simultaneously prioritizing secondary injury prevention.

Our sports-certified therapists have skills and knowledge to understand the spectrum of sports physical therapy needs. They are well-versed in various diagnoses from age-specific concerns that can arise in young athletes to joint replacements in older individuals. Our staff here at Samaritan Athletic Medicine are trained to treat various sports injuries across all populations.

What to Expect

One of our sport certified physical therapists will perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine how your sports injury affects your motion, strength, and overall function, and we will utilize this information to create a treatment plan to achieve your goals.

Our providers perform a full range of physical therapy treatments, including:

A biomechanical assessment is a physical examination that evaluates how you move. This typically involves a 2-dimensional video analysis and force plate assessment to identify your self-selected movement strategies. Your provider will also perform a body-region specific physical examination to identify underlying deficits that may be contributing to pain or performance deficits. Our sports physical therapy team will compile your results to provide a personalized treatment program.

Biomechanical assessments are used in combination with a thorough musculoskeletal evaluation to address injury and performance issues. During the initial evaluation, patients receive:

  • History and training program review.
  • Orthopedic examination (i.e., flexibility, strength, balance, skeletal alignment, postural assessment).
  • Full head-to-toe bike fit (road bike, mountain bike, etc) and associated assessment of cycling mechanics.
  • Treatment plan development, as appropriate.

All tests and findings will be reviewed with you immediately following the examination. If necessary, a treatment program will be implemented, with follow-up options discussed. Your treatment program could consist of therapeutic exercises, manual interventions and guidelines for a progressive return to your prior cycling level. Modification to your running form also might be recommended to correct adverse cycling mechanics.

Injury-related evaluations and services are billed to your insurance company. Please contact your insurance company to verify your coverage.

For patients interested in improving performance, cycling mechanics also can be evaluated. Our staff uses video analysis, a head-to-toe bike fit, and follow-up discussion to improve your cycling efficiency, reduce energy cost and prevent future injuries. In addition, a brief physical exam also can be performed.

If you are being seen for a performance assessment unrelated to injury, the following cost is payable at the time of service.

This is a 60 to 90-minute appointment that includes a 45+ minute head-to-toe bike fit and video analysis, a brief musculoskeletal screen and professional recommendations related to bike set-up, cycling mechanics or exercise interventions.

Biomechanical assessments are used in combination with a thorough musculoskeletal evaluation to address injury and performance issues. During the initial evaluation, patients receive:

  • History and running program review.
  • Orthopedic examination (i.e., flexibility, strength, balance, skeletal alignment, foot structure).
  • Video analysis (below) of running mechanics.
  • Treatment plan development, as appropriate.

In their work with runners, our sports physical therapists and performance specialists can use the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill to “unweight” athletes and allow them to rehabilitate injuries while minimizing the impact of gravity on the athlete’s body.

Biomechanical assessments are used in combination with a thorough musculoskeletal evaluation to address injury and performance issues. During the initial evaluation, patients receive:

  • A throwing/pitching and injury history.
  • A physical examination including strength, flexibility, coordination/balance, posture and throwing-specific movements.
  • Shoulder, scapular, elbow, spine and lower extremity assessment and alignment.
  • Slow-motion video analysis of your biomechanical patterns and strategies.
  • Treatment plan and specialized exercises based on the results of the physical examination and video analysis.

Traditional, heavy strength training can be difficult immediately after injury or surgery. Blood flow restriction training uses a light and safe form of blood occlusion that allows similar strength and muscular benefits as traditional strength training. This allows you to strengthen your body safely without overstressing injured tissues as they heal.

The SAM’s concussion care team includes sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, and sport physical therapists. All members have received specialized training in concussion evaluation and management. The concussion care team treats athletes of all ages who participate in sports across all skill levels, including professional, collegiate, and recreational athletes.

Sports physical therapists who are certified in manual therapy use their hands to manipulate and mobilize joints. This enhances joint mobility, decreases pain associated with muscle spasm, and improves functional mobility. Sprains, strains, tendonitis, and other soft-tissue injuries may also benefit from soft tissue mobilization.

Performance Assessment Services

Our state-of-the-art equipment allows us to directly assess muscular strength, power, and biomechanics (movement strategies), to determine how and injury or surgery has affected each of these domains. This information helps our physical therapists determine your readiness to progress through various phases of your rehabilitation, and ultimately provide information to your healthcare team to help determine when you’re ready to return to sport/activity.

Strength Testing

Technology used to test athlete's movements.

Our team of sports certified physical therapists utilize isometric and isokinetic testing to isolate specific muscle groups and assess their function and tolerance. By doing this, our therapists and sports performance staff can identify vulnerable areas and/or movements that may be contributing to pain, dysfunction and soreness. This is used as part of a rehabilitation/return-to-sport program, and for general assessments of the athlete at different stages.

Functional Testing

Our team of sports certified physical therapists will lead you through a series of injury and sport-specific movements using camera and force-plate assisted technology in order to identify areas of poor movement strategy that may be contributing to pain, dysfunction and soreness, or limiting full athletic performance.

Your sports physical therapist may have you perform exercises and movements that focus on restoring your range of motion, strength, and proper movement patterns based on any deficits identified in your initial assessment.
