A defibrillator detects abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias, and delivers an electric shock, if necessary, to restore a normal heart beat. Samaritan cardiologists place the small, battery-powered device under the skin, near the collarbone, to monitor and treat life-threatening heart rhythm problems.
