Trauma & Acute Care Services

Overview

24 hours a day, 365 days a year, a highly experienced and dedicated team of acute care surgeons, residents, registered nurses and ancillary staff is prepared to provide leading-edge care to patients with the most severe illnesses or injuries.

Throughout their hospital stay, patients are always under the direct care of a board-certified acute care surgeon. In addition, a multidisciplinary team of board-certified surgical and other specialists are available to provide expert care, including orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and plastic surgeons. The rapid availability of this multidisciplinary expertise ensures that patients receive the best possible care.

Trauma Services

Trauma patients are from all age groups and socioeconomic classes. The older woman who falls and breaks her hip, the middle-aged pedestrian who is hit by a car, the adolescent with a a neck injury from diving, the farm worker whose hand is injured in heavy machinery, the child burned in a fire – these are examples of traumatic injuries.

Many trauma patients enter the hospital system through the emergency department, with immediate life-threatening issues that require management of the airway, breathing and circulation. Once these vital functions are stabilized, the patient is rapidly moved to the next stage of treatment. From the emergency department, patients may be transported to the operating room, intensive care unit, hospital inpatient unit or to other areas of the hospital for further diagnostic tests.

At Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, the trauma surgeon usually remains the principal health care provider throughout the patient’s hospital stay. However, treatment of trauma patients is a team effort involving a wide range of professionals with specialized knowledge from several disciplines.

Acute Care Surgical Services

Acute Care Surgery provides comprehensive care for all general surgical emergencies involving adults and children. These can include acute appendicitis, cholecystitis, diverticulitis, pancreatitis, intestinal obstruction, incarcerated hernias and other surgical emergencies.

The fundamental goal is to provide emergent operative care for life or limb-threatening problems. This comprehensive care requires a cohesive health care team and multidisciplinary approach with other medical professionals, including orthopedics, neurosurgery, anesthesia, nursing, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy.
