Samaritan Welcomes Gregory Wood, MD

Gregory Wood, MD, has joined the Cardiology Department at Samaritan Heart Center. Dr. Wood specializes in cardiovascular disease, advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology.

He earned a bachelor’s degree at Gonzaga University, a master’s degree at University of Washington and a medical degree at University of Washington. He completed residency training at University of California at Davis Medical Center and fellowships at University Washington Medical Center and University of Illinois at Chicago.  

Dr. Wood manages all stages of heart failure.  This includes providing advanced therapies such as transplant and left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) for patients suffering from end stage heart failure through partnerships with regional transplant and LVAD centers. Dr. Wood has expertise in remote monitoring with pulmonary artery pressure sensor devices, which has been shown to improve quality of life by reducing heart failure hospitalizations. 

Before becoming a doctor, he first worked as a mechanical engineer.

“While I found engineering intellectually stimulating and rewarding, I was craving a more personal interaction and impact on people’s lives,” Dr. Wood recalled.

During graduate school, he worked with physicians on research projects and explored the idea of studying medicine.

“I have never looked back after making this decision,” he said. “I love what I do as a clinician. I enjoy the close relationships I have with patients.”

Away from the office, he enjoys spending time outdoors and road cycling. He is married to electrophysiologist Melissa Robinson, MD, who recently joined Samaritan Heart Center. 

“I also enjoy hiking and camping with my family,” he said. “At home, I love to cook.”
