Lincoln City Hospital Design-Build Project Earns Merit Award August 17, 2022 Skanska USA Building Inc. received a National Award of Merit in the Healthcare Facilities category from the Design-Build Institute of America for its Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital replacement project. The Samaritan project was one of just three health care projects selected for recognition from entries across the nation. “We knew we were embarking on a unique, collaborative experience when we selected Skanska to lead the design and construction of our new hospital,” said SNLH CEO Lesley Ogden, MD. “They worked with our staff and our community to discover what was needed for an efficient, flexible hospital — and they delivered.” Lisa Washington, executive of the DBIA, said the design-build method of construction is gaining acceptance, helping to raise the bar for construction performance. “The collaborative mindset and spirit exhibited by these award-winning teams created the environment for innovative designs, clear lines of communication and the whole-team approach necessary to elevate ingenuity and successfully navigate unprecedented challenges,” Washington said. The other merit winning projects in the DBIA competition’s Healthcare Facilities category are located in Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Lansing, Michigan. Along with Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital, they are nominees for the National Award of Excellence in the Healthcare Facilities category, which will be announced in November. About the Samaritan Hospital Project A critical access hospital, the replacement Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital opened in February 2020. It was constructed just a few feet away from the existing 52-year-old hospital, which was removed to make room for other hospital campus improvements, all of which were completed in June 2020. Hospital staff worked closely with HGA architects and Skanska builders from the beginning to ensure that the completed design of the 52,000-square-foot building promotes optimal care for patients. Flexible use of space provides more convenient services for patients. Related departments are located near each other, which means greatly improved work efficiencies for staff. The latest medical and technology equipment are available, and the facility was built to the highest safety and seismic standards. Altogether, this allows for quick and competent care with each patient’s comfort and safety at the forefront. The new SNLH was designed with onstage and offstage areas — that is, areas used by the public and areas used by staff. This provides greater patient privacy, ease of wayfinding for patients and visitors and more efficient work movement for staff. The hospital has 16 private inpatient rooms and the Emergency Department has five exam rooms and two trauma exam rooms. Two of these exam rooms can be used as safe rooms, specially designed for comfort, decreased stimulation and safety for patients with mental health issues.
