Hospital Receives Robotic Surgery Designation April 13, 2016 Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center has been designated as a training Epicenter for bariatric robotic-assisted surgery by Intuitive Surgical, the manufacturer of the da Vinci Robotic-Assisted Surgical System. Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center is one of only three designated training centers for bariatric surgery in the United States where surgeons from across the United States, as well as surgical residents, will learn surgical techniques using the da Vinci surgical system at the Corvallis hospital. “This designation is recognition of Samaritan’s commitment to offering patients a high-quality surgical experience using the most advanced technology available,” said Larry Mullins, DHA, president and CEO of Samaritan Health Services. “Our extensive experience with the da Vinci Surgical System allows us to train future surgeons both locally and around the country through a customized training program that shares our best practices for patient outcomes.” Selection criteria for the Epicenter designation is based on multiple factors, including a dedicated robotics team and surgeons who demonstrate a mastery of skills through their performance of bariatric and general surgery procedures with excellent patient outcomes, demonstration of minimally invasive surgery techniques, and the ability and willingness to teach their peers to perform robotic surgery. Robotic-assisted surgery is the next phase in the evolution of minimally invasive surgery. Procedures performed with a daVinci robot require smaller incisions and are less painful, which lead to faster recovery and return to regular activity for patients. Some procedures can be performed through a single incision and the technological features enable surgeons to perform complicated operations with higher precision. This designation is attributed to the great people working on our surgical teams and the successful outcomes they have achieved with robotic-assisted surgery.
