Department Expectations & Guidelines

Medical Surgical and Intensive Care Unit

  • Students should use the main breakroom, cafeteria, outdoor spaces or other appropriate location you feel comfortable taking a break.
  • Do not use the ICU breakroom due to its small size; it is reserved exclusively for staff.
  • There are always learning opportunities. Every time you walk by or enter a room, there is an opportunity for a safety check and purposeful rounding.

Emergency

  • For breaks, please use the shared breakroom or cafeteria.
  • Please arrive prepared to learn. Be aware of discussions taking place at the nursing station and remember to not use your phone to ensure HIPAA compliance.

Labor & Delivery

  • Students should use the cafe or shared breakroom.
  • Students will have the best experience if they are not hesitant to follow the nurse everywhere. This specialty can be intimidating and intimate, but please engage, see and do all the things. Don’t be shy!

Surgical Services

  • Students should use the cafe or shared breakroom.
  • Our department will provide scrubs for student rotations in the operating room.
