Curriculum

Rotation Schedule

The academic year consists of 13 blocks, which are a mix of two- and four-week rotations, with longitudinal elements embedded throughout your three years of training.  There are longitudinal experiences in continuity clinic, leadership, pediatrics, geriatrics, obstetrics and osteopathic manipulative medicine. A sample of the Family Medicine curriculum is listed below.

Intern Year

Continuity clinic will be each week except when on away rotations. Days in Continuity Clinic are adjusted per rotation. All residents are limited to one half day of clinic per week while on inpatient rotations.

Ambulatory Care/Welcome4 weeksThis is primarily a team and foundation building block rotation – getting to know your team, the clinic and other critical residency components. You’ll also become certified in NRP, ALSO and PALS.
Inpatient Medicine12 weeksThis is a rigorous rotation with our Family Medicine Teaching Service (FMTS). The first four weeks are in a block, the subsequent eight weeks are divided into two-week blocks and spread throughout the year.
Inpatient Pediatrics8 weeksThe first four weeks are spent at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center (GSRMC) with excellent exposure to nursery and some exposure to sick hospitalized children, and the next four weeks are spent at Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland, Ore., a regional hub for high acuity pediatric care.
Obstetrics4 weeksWorking with our OB/GYN and Midwife colleagues at GSRMC.
Outpatient Pediatrics4 weeksWorking with one of our community pediatricians.
Sports medicine4 weeksWorking at Samaritan Athletic Medicine on the Oregon State University campus with patients from the community as well as OSU athletes.
Continuity Clinic16 weeks and longitudinalThis is the bedrock of your training experience managing your own panel of patients in our residency group practice, an Oregon Health Authority five star designated PCPCH. 

Second Year

Inpatient Medicine6 weeksThree two-week rotations helping lead the FMTS.
Rural Inpatient Medicine4 weeksTwo two-week rotations at Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital helps push your clinical autonomy in this critical access hospital.
Obstetrics4 weeksWorking with our OB/GYN and Midwife colleagues at GSRMC.
ICU2 weeksManaging ICU patients at GSRMC with the Intensive Care team.
Inpatient Cardiology2 weeksTwo weeks with the academic cardiology service at GSRMC.
Emergency Medicine4 weeksTwo two-week rotations at GSRMC, a regional level 2 trauma center.
Urgent Care4 weeksA popular rotation working primarily with Family Medicine Urgent Care physicians focusing on triage, procedures and efficiency.
Dermatology2 weeksExposure to a wide variety of dermatology conditions, as well as treatments, procedures and Mohs surgery.
Outpatient Pediatrics4 weeksWorking with one of our community pediatricians.
Continuity Clinic8 weeks and longitudinalThis is the bedrock of your training experience, managing your own panel of patients in our residency group practice, an Oregon Health Authority 5 star designated PCPCH. 
Electives12 weeksTwelve weeks total of two- or four-week block experiences with a long list of prior electives and flexibility to explore what’s important to you.

Third Year

Continuity clinic will be each week except when on away rotations. Days in Continuity Clinic are adjusted per rotation. All residents are limited to one half day of clinic per week while on inpatient rotations.

Inpatient Medicine6 weeksThree two-week rotations leading the FMTS, ideally functioning as a Jr. attending.
Obstetrics4 weeksFour weeks at GSRMC or Samaritan Albany General Hospital.
Pediatric Emergency Medicine4 weeksManaging pediatric patients presenting to the Emergency Room at Providence St. Vincent in Portland, Ore.
Outpatient Gen Surg and Wound Care4 weeksA mixture of bariatric surgery and wound care.
Hospice and Palliative Care4 weeksA blend of inpatient palliative care with the palliative care consult service and hospice with Evergreen Hospice service.
Sports Medicine4 weeksWorking at Samaritan Athletic Medicine on the Oregon State University campus with patients from the community as well as OSU athletes.

Longitudinal Experiences

GynecologyIn our in-house OB/GYN clinic and/or working with our OB/GYN colleagues.
GeriatricsRounding at a local nursing home with our geriatrician partners.
Community MedicineWorking at a free clinic in Corvallis and Albany.  Developing exposures to street medicine and farm worker medicine.
Addiction MedicineWork with Samaritan Treatment and Recovery Service.
Outpatient ObstetricsYou’ll be assigned a “Centering” group of pregnant patients and partner with OB and Midwife colleagues.
Behavioral HealthWork on developing micro-skills and macro-skills with our Residency behaviorist. 

Didactics

Our didactic program is a two-year rotating curriculum focused on the tenets of family medicine with simulation and procedural experiences. This takes place every Wednesday afternoon where you are protected from clinic and rotation duties.

Scholarly Activity

During your residency training, you will participate in two scholarly activities. We have two goals for all residents:

  • To be able to conduct a quality improvement project as well as be able to incorporate evidence into practice.
  • To incorporate evidence into practice.

Samaritan Health Services has a medical library and librarian to help you gather you research and articles. Once you have your data, we have two statisticians to help you synthesize your data and prepare it for publication.
