The med-surg nurse and oncology nurse internships are six-week programs designed to support new graduate nurses into their nursing role. Applicants to either of these programs must have completed a nursing program within the past six months.
In conjunction with the six-month new graduate nurse program, the med-surg and oncology internships assist the transition from new graduate nurse to advanced beginner nurse by providing support, mentoring and education based on application of knowledge and clinical skills beyond the traditional orientation plan. The format for these programs includes discussions, hands-on simulations, precepting and guest speakers.
The programs focus on communication skills, integration of leadership, patient outcomes and professional role development relating to the selected topics and development of clinical judgment. Opportunities will be provided to adjust content to the group’s experiences and identified needs.
During the six-week internship, med-surg and oncology interns will focus on patient-centered care, communication and teamwork, time management, quality improvement, nursing documentation and evidence-based practice.
The clinical development specialist serves as the facilitator for the med-surg and oncology internship programs. Interns also will interact with interdisciplinary guest speakers.
