Midwifery Shines in New Clinic Name

New Name, Same Great Care at Samaritan Obstetrics, Gynecology & Midwifery

Samaritan’s OB/GYN clinic in Corvallis has featured midwives providing patient care alongside obstetricians for almost two decades. Now the clinic has a new name, Samaritan Obstetrics, Gynecology & Midwifery, while continuing to offer top-quality, patient-centered care.

“We added midwifery to the name to be sure our community knows we’re here,” said Certified Nurse Midwife Emily Yeast. “Especially those who are new to the area.”

The clinic’s certified nurse-midwives provide wellness care, reproductive services, pre-natal care and labor and delivery. They deliver more than 95% of babies born vaginally to Samaritan Obstetrics, Gynecology & Midwifery patients.

“We independently manage low-risk labors and collaborate with our clinic’s obstetricians on moderate to high-risk labors,” said Yeast. “If a cesarean section delivery is needed, the midwives assist our obstetricians and remain closely involved in the patient’s care. This unique model of care, where moderate and high-risk patients are collaboratively managed by both a midwife and an obstetrician, is the best of both worlds.”

This team-based prenatal care, also known as collaborative care, includes experts in normal pregnancy and childbirth (certified nurse-midwives) and experts in high-risk pregnancy and surgery (obstetricians). Research has shown collaborative care often improves the quality of care and the overall experience of pregnant patients and their families.

Collaborative care ensures coordinated communication among health care providers, reducing unnecessary testing and improving the patient experience. It also improves health outcomes and results in a higher likelihood of vaginal birth, less chance of cesarean delivery and lower preterm birth rates.

“Collaborative care is patient-centered care,” said Yeast. “The patient is the most important member of the health care team. We want to know each patient’s needs and desires – for their health and their pregnancy, labor and delivery. Our midwives and the entire care team focus on meeting the needs of each individual patient and their family.”

About Certified Nurse-midwives

“The midwifery approach to health care has never been more important,” said Yeast. “Today’s patients expect the best care. They expect health care providers to understand and value their individual needs and partner with them in making health decisions.”

With advanced education and focus on research, certified nurse-midwives listen to what is important to each person’s unique situation and work with other members of the health care team to achieve a holistic, satisfying and safe outcome.
