Our Psychiatry Residency Program offers dynamic and comprehensive patient-centered training, preparing the clinician to practice in a diverse range of community settings.
Our Psychiatry Residency Training is patient-centered and prepares the clinician to practice in a diverse range of community settings. The program challenges our residents to integrate varied conceptual models including psychodynamic, psychosocial, biologic, behavioral and cognitive, for the benefit of those we serve. We accomplish this integration through dynamic and comprehensive learning experiences, both didactic and clinical, in a variety of community settings. Our community partners actively engage our residents to become part of community-based teams, serving our community. through a variety of frameworks based on the philosophy of the partner agency. These diverse learning experiences prepare our residents to provide broad-based and patient centered mental health care, assume leadership roles in medicine and the community, and contribute to the evolving knowledge base of the specialty of psychiatry.
Our program offers anyone with an interest in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry the opportunity to stay in the community and continue their education in an ACGME-accredited child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship.
Our training program aims to create community-based psychiatrists capable of thriving in a team-based environment and dedicated to the wellbeing of the patient, the clinician, and the communities we serve.
Current Samaritan Health Services’ residents share why they find the Psychiatry Residency Program so enriching as they complete their training.
The didactic portion of our program offers a one half-day per week experience addressing multiple aspects of psychopharmacology, psychotherapy and crucial topics applicable to all physicians.
Our teaching staff is dedicated to providing mental health care to individuals and families, advocacy, research, and teaching. We enjoy our work and our teaching, creating an environment that is supportive and encourages residents to strive for excellence in clinical knowledge and skills.
Each resident develops a sense of professional identity that includes being a secure physician, an advocate for patients, a sensitive and competent therapist and a thoughtful member of any care team.

The Willamette Valley is filled with a variety of activities and outdoor adventures, ranging from hiking and mountain biking to mellow floats down the river in the summer. In the winter, you can enjoy a day or weekend ski trip to one of several ski areas in the Oregon Cascades.
Corvallis also has a great variety of food options ranging from French pastries in the morning to late-night burritos, as well as several breweries, wineries and a local cider house. We even have a Farmer’s Market on Saturday with lots of local produce, farm-raised meats and bakeries selling fresh breads and treats that you can enjoy in one of the surrounding parks.
Corvallis is also home to the Oregon State Beavers and we have the opportunity to go to various Pac-12 sporting events. One of our favorites is when the Oregon Ducks come over to challenge us in the ‘Rivalry Game’ and the town shows up for an electrifying game!
“The best part of the residency program is my fellow residents and the staff members here. Being a small hospital, I know almost everyone at the hospital and everyone who works at the clinic.” — Brenda Bye, DO, Class of 2015
“What struck me during my Sub-I and now starting my intern year is the approachability of all staff and attendings. I have never felt so comfortable and supported if I have any questions or need clarification. When people say to come with any questions or concerns I feel they truly mean it. Along with this comes transparency that I feel is present on all levels. I know my supervisors are working towards the best program they can provide for the residents and are honest when things don’t go as planned or need improvement and what the plans are to accomplish this. Work-life balance has always been important to me, I feel the sanity and well being of residents is taken into account while still providing ample opportunities for learning and becoming a better physician. I feel supported here in my interests both inside and outside of medicine. I feel respected and that my input has value with my peers and attendings. Lastly, Corvallis is an amazing community to live and practice medicine in. There are amazing outdoor recreational activities and it’s a community very open to health and improvement. It’s fun working in a community program and feeling like you’re making a bigger impact.” — Jesse Kipperman, DO, Class of 2024
